In 1990, Cameron K. Tebbi, MD, looked into the future and saw the potential of a Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology unit in Tampa. Having recently moved to Tampa General Hospital, Dr. Tebbi is currently professor of Pediatrics and chairman of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of South Florida. Dr. Tebbi is not only a leader in the treatment of children with cancer, he is also on the forefront of research into cancers affecting children. He has helped to build the reputation locally, nationally and oversees a highly skilled staff of professionals. Dr. Tebbi founded the Hematology/Oncology Research Laboratory which currently is located at Tampa Bay Research Institute. This laboratory has made a significant progress in research of childhood cancer. The findings in this laboratory may result in better understanding of etiology of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children. Prior to joining USF and Tampa General Hospital, Dr. Tebbi was the Medical Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Research Laboratories at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa, Florida. Dr. Tebbi has served as a permanent member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Cancer Institute. He has authored numerous articles and edited two books on pediatric and adolescent oncology. His current research interests include a combination of studies designed to evaluate the induction and development of leukemia cell surface phenotypes and find possible means to detect leukemia in patients “cured” of the disease. The ultimate purpose of these studies are to possibly identify individuals with a “tendency” to develop acute lymphoblastic leukemia with the ultimate goal of preventing this disease.
It is estimated that one out of every 330 children in America will develop cancer before the age of 20. Research conducted in the lab has already yielded encouraging results.
